Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and gold macaw is a stunning bird with a stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it a great companion for families. It is also very good in socializing, and can quickly learn new phrases and tricks.

Lolita's Personality
Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a range of members. They can get bored easily and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that are fond of playing, climbing and play. They need to spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls that can be annoying to those who live in condos or apartments.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only method to determine the sex. Once the birds' sex is known, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This isn't a simple process, and it is essential that the pet's owner has patience and understands that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member, on a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could live the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. buymacaw created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a part in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
